Perceptions Math was designed as a supplemental intensive mathematics intervention to teach and practice core math concepts that the student may have had difficulty grasping in earlier grades. Ideally students are given enough time to master each concept before progressing but sometimes that doesn’t happen.

Here at MathCanada we frequently receive inquires from parents looking to help their children struggling with mathematics. When consulting with some of these families on what level to place their children in we’ve recommended they have their children review missing gaps in their knowledge of core math concepts. Sometimes these gaps span multiple levels adding to the complexity and difficulty. We have found that Perceptions Math is a great program to use that will help find and teach these missing gaps in knowledge before progressing. 

If you are a parent of a child who is struggling with math and the our placement tests are suggesting they start in a lower level than their age might indicate then the Perceptions Math program might be a great solution to bridge those gaps first and then introduce them to Math-U-See! 

Perceptions Green Book is a multi-grade, multi-concept program covering concepts related to the operations of addition and subtraction facts with regrouping, multiplication and division facts, data and graphing, telling time and elapsed time, along with beginning fractions. Students will be exposed to:

• Mathematical operations related to whole numbers and fractions
• Critical thinking for algebra including equations, factoring, and solving for unknowns
• Developing number sense and how numbers work in the decimal system

Math concepts build one upon another, as an example, multiplication could be considered a quick method of addition. If your child still struggles with addition they will likely also end up struggling with multiplication.  If your child is X years or older and still struggling with these concepts then Perceptions Green Book could be a beneficial remedial program to help catch them up before progressing further in their mastery of math.  

Perceptions Blue Book is focused on the operations of Multiplication (including Multiple-Digit Multiplication with Regrouping), Division (including through Long Division with Remainders), Ratios, and Fractions (Equivalencies, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division) along with Mixed Numbers, & lots more! The Blue Level of Perceptions does assume your student has mastered their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts if they have not please consider looking at the Green Level of Perceptions.
