The Analytical Grammar curriculum helps students communicate more effectively by providing thoughtful instruction of English grammar. Rather than relying on memorization, this program uses activities that lead students to develop a genuine understanding of grammar. This is the newest version updated and made available in 2023.
Analytical Grammar consists of five levels that teach grammar in a logical order, so skills build upon one another. Complete our placement activity to find the right starting point for your student!
We suggest that you wait until your student is at least 9 years old to begin the Analytical Grammar program.
However, if you think your student might be ready please give us a call.
Has your student completed instruction that covers the nine parts of speech?
If you are unsure if your student has had instruction that covers the nine parts of speech, administer Activity 1.
Level 1: Grammar Basics introduces students to many foundational grammar skills.
Level 2: Mechanics provides guidelines for punctuation, capitalization, and usage rules for students that already have a basic foundation in grammar.
In Level 3: Parts of Speech, students will practice and apply their knowledge about parts of speech and how they interact with each other. Students will learn to analyze and identify the roles that parts of speech play in a sentence.
In Level 4: Phrases and Clauses, students will examine and identify parts of speech, phrases, and clauses that can fulfill multiple roles depending on how they’re used in a sentence. This allows students to develop more complex sentences and express ideas more effectively.
Level 5: Punctuation and Usage focuses on developing a comprehensive knowledge of punctuation and word usage. Students will round out their grammar knowledge by combining the proper use of punctuation with all they have learned about grammar constructs.
Lesson Notes provide instruction and examples for each topic.
Exercises A, B, and CÂ give students plenty of practice in applying their new knowledge.
Playing with Words and Application & Enrichment activities provide weekly instruction and practice with functional writing skills.
Assessments are always open book and provide an accurate measure of proficiency.
In addition, some levels have Reinforcement pages provided outside of the lessons to keep skills sharp between levels.
